HERE is Nokia's answer to Google Maps and Apple's Maps. Its flagship feature is downloadable maps that you can easily use offline when traveling without an internet connection.
A complete map app with great offline features
At first glance, HERE is very similar to the competition. You can search for addresses, restaurants and shops, and get directions very easily. HERE has turn by turn navigation too, and if you sign up for a free HERE account, you can download any maps you want. Unlike Google Maps, HERE maps are downloaded in great detail, even including the voice guidance with turn by turn navigation. What you download is only limited to the memory capacity of your device.
When using HERE for navigation, you can choose between directions on foot, by car or on public transit. HERE includes real time traffic data, like Google Maps, though obviously this can't be used offline. Another feature is Glympse, which lets you share your location or destination with any of your contacts. As well as getting a location notification, your friends will get an estimated arrival time too, which is pretty neat.
HERE has Satellite, Transit and Traffic views. The last two feature 3D models of buildings for major cities, which makes it easier to recognize the map you’re viewing. The latest version also adds 3D maps of shopping malls and airports in 70 countries.
If you've used a map app before, you'll be right at home
Here is easy to use, and well designed. You will feel at home with the app very quickly, making it an ideal alternative to Google Maps.
Great for vacations
HERE’s big selling point is its downloadable offline maps. It’s really useful to be able to use navigation without eating into data when you’re traveling. If you’re looking for the best maps app to take on holiday, HERE might just be what you’re looking for.
